An international parcel passes through many hands, vehicles and sorting machines before it reaches its destination. Good packing is what keeps it safe on that journey. Here are eight practical tips.
1. Use a strong, new box
Old boxes lose strength. Choose a sturdy corrugated box that is in good condition and has no dents or damp patches.
2. Pick the right size
A box that is too big lets items move and wastes money. A box that is too small can burst. Leave room for cushioning on every side.
3. Cushion every item
Wrap each item separately and fill the gaps with bubble wrap, paper or foam so nothing can shift when the box is shaken.
4. Double-box fragile items
For fragile things, pack the item in a small box with cushioning, then place that box inside a larger one with more padding around it.
5. Seal the box properly
Use strong packing tape and seal all the seams along the top and bottom, ideally in an “H” pattern. Thin household tape often gives way.
6. Do not overfill
If the lid bulges, the box will be under pressure and may split. It is better to use a bigger box than to force things in.
7. Label clearly
Write the receiver’s full address and phone number clearly on the outside. Place a copy of the address inside the parcel too, in case the outer label is damaged.
8. Weigh and measure
Carriers often charge by the greater of the actual weight and the volumetric weight. A common formula for volumetric weight is length x width x height in centimetres, divided by 5000. A neat, compact parcel usually costs less to send.
